Playing With Words Speech Therapy is committed to helping children acquire and expand skills needed for meaningful communication within their families and communities.
We believe in empowering parents and caregivers to set their child up for success. Families will have received extensive coaching and tools to support their child’s communication across the developmental years.

Us
We have over 7 years of experience in treating various communication difficulties in children of all ages. Our approach is child-centered, allowing for personalization of sessions and optimal results. Our calm and friendly attitude create a positive learning experience throughout the intervention process. We believe that parent education is an essential part of treatment and encourage a dynamic interaction across sessions.

Early Intervention
If your child is between the ages of 1-3 years old and have any concerns regarding communication development, the earlier you seek help, the better. This approach focuses on child-centered activities, parent coaching, and laying the foundational skills needed for speech and language development.
Speech Sound Disorders
By around the age of three, most kids speak more clearly. If a child’s speech does not develop as they get older, they might have a speech sound disorder. Specific signs include:

Struggling to make certain speech sounds

Not speaking as well as other children their age

Difficult for others to understand

Lisping or slurring speech


Receptive-Expressive Language Delays
Children with delays in language have trouble communicating in one or many different areas of language. Specific signs include:

Difficulty in answering or asking questions

Difficulty following directions or understanding spoken sentences

Difficulty expressing their thoughts or lacking vocabulary

Short sentences or difficulty with grammar
Stuttering
Stuttering can be characterized as the inability for children to speak smoothly. Specific signs that a child may have a stutter include:

Repetitions: This is when a sound, part of a word, whole word or phrase is repeated. For example: ‘A a a and I want that one.’

Prolongations: This is when a sound is stretched out – for example, ‘Aaaaaaaaaaand I want that one’.

Blocks: This is when a child tries to speak, and no sound comes out.
-
Secondary behaviors: such as blinking their eyes or facial grimacing
