Speech Sound Disorders

By around the age of three, most kids speak more clearly. If a child’s speech does not develop as they get older, they might have a speech sound disorder. Specific signs include:

  • Struggling to make certain speech sounds

  • Not speaking as well as other children their age

  • Difficult for others to understand

  • Lisping or slurring speech

Receptive-Expressive Language Delays

Children with delays in language have trouble communicating in one or many different areas of language. Specific signs include:

  • Difficulty in answering or asking questions

  • Difficulty following directions or understanding spoken sentences

  • Difficulty expressing their thoughts or lacking vocabulary

  • Short sentences or difficulty with grammar

Stuttering

Stuttering can be characterized as the inability for children to speak smoothly. Specific signs that a child may have a stutter include:

  • Repetitions: This is when a sound, part of a word, whole word or phrase is repeated. For example: ‘A a a and I want that one.’

  • Prolongations: This is when a sound is stretched out – for example, ‘Aaaaaaaaaaand I want that one’.

  • Blocks: This is when a child tries to speak, and no sound comes out.
